Housing prospects for the year ahead were the subject for discussion in the first CEO Forum for 2020. The Government’s substantial majority makes it well placed to carry through manifesto commitments to changes in housing.
How this will impact on Help to Buy, shared ownership, discounted market homes and other initiatives is as yet unclear.
But housing associations are committed to continuing to build more homes. And local authorities are increasingly keen to put their own resources into developing new homes. Boroughs are flexing their muscles and getting directly involved in delivering what they want, rather than relying on developers to deliver on their behalf.
The issue now is about ensuring boroughs have the mechanics of delivery right, with many boroughs now grappling with how to overcome skills shortages and development inexperience in a competitive market. Partnership working can be a key to developing new homes, at scale and at pace.
Topics examined:
- Development expertise in local authorities
- Skills shortages
