The Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission aims to ensure new housing developments meet needs and expectations, making them more likely to be welcomed, rather than resisted, by communities.
It has recently published its interim report. In the weeks running up to that, The Housing Forum held a roundtable CEO Forum to examine the topic. The discussion looked at broad issues of placemaking, design and quality.
The drivers which are influencing quality and better placemaking, giving rise to optimism are:
- government policy, and
- an increased sense of corporate and individual responsibility – partly as the result of Grenfell reputational risk – for housebuilders particularly – of poorly built homes in ill thought out developments.
In terms of policy, politicians irrespective of party, will be hearing from constituents on the doorstep how important quality is in new build homes.
There is an acceptance from all sides that to win back the support of communities we need to build better homes and the spaces between the homes also need to be improved. Government policy is reflective of this with the revised NPPF, the New Homes Ombudsman and the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission.
