In February The Housing Forum brought together organisations from across the housing sector to write a letter to the Chancellor urging the Government to make a £2bn downpayment on the forthcoming Affordable Homes Programme, so enable industry to prioritise the delivery of affordable homes. We also called for a 10-year rent settlement for social housing, giving social landlords access to the Building Safety Fund, support for first-time buyers and better resourcing for local authorities.  We were delighted that in March, the Chancellor responded to our calls for expediating the funding for affordable housing by announcing an additional £2bn to be made available.

Stephen Teagle, Chair of The Housing Forum said:

“This additional funding signals that the Government is listening to the sector and reaffirms its strong commitment to accelerating the delivery of much-needed affordable housing while driving economic growth. It represents an unprecedented intervention which, when paired with sustained, long-term investment, will be instrumental in meeting the growing demand for affordable homes.

Now, it’s up to the industry to rise to the challenge — accelerating delivery, building momentum towards the government’s target of 1.5 million new homes, and ensuring we provide the housing this country urgently needs.”
