Delivering housing, infrastructure and building sustainable communities is a task that will require cross industry combined insights and analysis of what has worked well and what has to be done to achieve sustainable delivery. The Housing Forum has therefore brought together people from across the housing sector to share expertise on what has worked well with new towns and expanded settlements.
With the input from this working group, we have submitted evidence to the House of Lords’ Built Environment Committe’s Inquiry into New Towns.
The New Towns programme – if successful – should achieve a significant increase in housing delivery above and beyond the level that can be achieved via locally led delivery alone. There is also the potential for place-making and for delivering housing in the broad housing market areas where it is most needed. This will help to address major structural imbalances in housing supply and give greater certainty over deliver outcomes through a new generation of regenerative design. The result should be high quality enduring places that are economically sustainable.
