The Forum focused on the long-term national need for a strong housing supply and the necessity for all political parties to support housing policies which unify the resources of clients, contractors and critical supply-side issues.
There are four fundamental elements to housing supply: enduring need, continuing government intervention in the markets in order to sell homes, a robust purchasing sector, and the tools – sufficient people, capital and land supply – to deliver that supply.
The UK suffers from an imbalance of tenures, and therefore a lack of affordable supply. In response to this crisis, Chair of The Housing Forum, Stephen Teagle, presented our 10-point manifesto to support supply and quality in the housing sector.
Achieving increased supply of the right homes and raising the quality of new homes are heavily impacted by wider economic conditions and the approach taken by Government through supply and demand side measures.
Unlike investment in other infrastructure, Government can commit to capital programmes and policies which realise immediate economic impacts in the lifetime of an administration and provides demonstrable outputs to voters.
Modern methods of construction (MMC) has a growing role in increasing supply and raising quality. NHBC approach quality in MMC on the same basis as traditional-build homes, giving full risk assessments. The focus on quality within this new environment tends to focus on the factory side of the process – attention should always be paid to the quality of what happens on-site.
