The Housing Forum’s Spotlight on 26 May 2023 focused on the topical issue of nutrient neutrality. A total of 74 local authority areas across England are currently affected by this issue, as they are in catchments with protected freshwater habitats vulnerable to nutrient pollution. To gain planning permission, schemes must be ‘nutrient neutral’ – meaning that the nitrates and/ or phosphates entering the water system as a result of a new development are offset by the removal of an equivalent amount of those nutrients within the water catchment area.

We invited our two speakers in to address Housing Forum members on the issue and share knowledge about the ways forward.
