The Spring Forum 2017 covered the prospects for 2017, the Industrial Strategy, and the Mayor’s Housing Strategy.
New models of funding housing growth were set out including the Barking and Dagenham Development Company, Babergh and Mid Suffolk Joint Capital Investment Fund and the innovative Pocket model for affordable housing.
Mark Farmer gave the concluding presentation on measures to increase skills and the skills pipeline and measures to stimulate off site manufacture. Including how:
- The Housing industry needs to recognise the opportunities and benefits of intelligent design for manufacture
- There is an impending skills crisis with both an ageing workforce and a potential loss of up to a third of the workforce due to Brexit – so take the initiative and prepare
- Housing supply needs to be increased by involving all players and through innovation.
- Offsite or pre-manufacture will help to reduce risk and delivery costs, and improve speed and long-term value creation. It will also help address the skills shortage by allowing more to be done in the factory so that traditional skills available where needed for assembly on site.
