Progress has been made in local council’s direct delivery of housing and many councils now are engaging in housing provision in a range of ways.
Hosted in partnership with long standing members Wates, this Forum assessed the progress made and issues outstanding in local council direct delivery of housing.
This Forum was joined by Professor Janice Morphet who has published several reports and case studies on local council house building. Professor Morphet outlined key headlines from her recent research on council housing plans – two years on from her 2017 survey.
Many councils now are engaging in housing provision in a range of ways. Central government should not try to impose a one-size-fits-all approach on the sector.
Councils are getting involved with housing provision because they realise the traditional methods of delivery and planning systems are not providing the type of homes needed locally – they have to do it themselves. They accept housing is a core function of a council. They’ve seen the scale of homelessness, and they want it tackled.
