In June 2024, housing sector experts met at a roundtable organised by BPTW and The Housing Forum to discuss the role of the Principal Designer under the Building Safety Act 2022.  

The roundtable revolved around a number of substantive questions:  

  1. How is the Principal Designer role evolving?  
  2. Who should the Principal Designer be? 
  3. How can the Principal Designer best be supported by the client and Principal Contractor?  
  4. How can an industry-wide competency standards be developed?  
  5. What are the current difficulties in achieving approval by the regulator for higher risk buildings, particularly at Gateway 2, and how can these be reduced?
