Housing Partnership Summits are collaborative events from The Housing Forum and encourage cross sector partnership which are essential to address complex issues of sustainable housing development.

Our March event was held at the The University of Salford with a demonstration of housing typologies and advanced building technologies that are accelerating progress towards net zero housing design.

Professor William Swan, Director of Energy House Laboratories explained that at the world leading research facility, two environment chambers accommodate two detached houses under controlled conditions to replicate a wide variety of temperatures and weather conditions. Testing is carried out on a range of building products including foundations, windows, solar panels and heat pumps.

Major housebuilders and manufacturers are co-operating in research which is shared for public benefit. It is the rigour of testing carried out at the laboratory that will establish that the design intent and the outcome are equal. Work will continue into a solution for the existing stock – which is one of our greatest challenges

At Alumni House, Dr Navid Khordehgah PhD, MCIPHE, Hybrid Product Manager at Worcester Bosch delivered a presentation on the future of heat in buildings and the role Hybrid Heat Pumps in reducing carbon emission and consumer running costs. Dr Khordehgah briefed delegates on the operation of hybrid heat pumps – a combination of two or more technologies teaming up to generate heat. These typically consist of a gas or oil boiler, a hybrid unit, and an air to water heat pump.

After the heat pump has been installed externally, the Bosch hybrid unit can be installed either internally or externally and is compact enough to fit inside a kitchen cupboard. With simple installation, it requires no change to the existing heating system, and for the end user, there are clear and straightforward controls.
