The Housing Forum has provided input to Government on questions to be asked in the 2031 Census. We have emphasised the importance of continuing to collect data on demographics and housing, including the tenure and size of properties, which are crucial in understanding future housing requirements. We have also proposed a new question to be added on whether the property has a connection to the gas network – when combined with exiting questions around heating types (which can identify those burning oil or other fossil fuels for heating) this will enable us to identify how many homes are ‘zero carbon ready’ – ie they will be zero carbon once the grid is fully decarbonised. This will help understand the scale of the challenge remaining, and where both industry and government need to focus efforts.
