The Housing Forum Futures Network is proud to launch its latest report ‘Breaking Barriers: Collaborative Solutions to Housing Delivery’. Drawing on insights from sector-wide surveys, in-depth interviews, and round table discussions, the report sheds light on the persistent challenges slowing the delivery of new homes at scale, and offers cross-sector, collaborative solutions to overcoming these barriers.

A five-part podcast series has also been recorded to complement the report, bringing the voices behind the findings to life and exploring the solutions in more depth. Together, the report and podcast offer a clear, actionable solutions grounded in real-world experience and cross-sector collaboration.

A complementary podcast series has been developed alongside the Breaking Barriers report, with topics informed by the results of the survey, interviews and round-table discussions. The purpose of the podcasts is to add depth and context to the data already collected in an accessible and engaging format.

The episodes present first-hand experience of barriers to affordable housing delivery, and their associated real-world solutions. The intention is to spark ongoing conversations beyond the initial research phase, and foster future cross sector collaboration to achieve our collective end goal of providing a quality home for all.

There are five episodes in the series, covering the following topics:

  • Adopting MMC
  • Temporary accommodation
  • Building safety
  • Skills shortages
  • Funding

Episode 1 | Housing Delivery using MMC | Breaking Barriers

In the light of the Government’s targets of building 1.5 million homes, how can the affordable housing sector overcome the barrier of adopting MMC and utilising its clear potential? Nigel Ostime (Hawkins\Brown) joins Sarah Wigley (Baily Garner) to discuss how cross-sector collaboration and improving understanding of the manufacturing process will help the industry ‘cross the chasm’ of adopting MMC.

Episode 2 | Temporary Accommodation | Breaking Barriers

In the second episode of our Breaking Barriers podcast series, Bronwen Thomson (Clarion Housing Group) speaks to Hugh Jeffery (Wates Residential) and Colin Ainger (HTA Design) to learn about how Wates and HTA have collaborated on an innovative solution to provide high-quality temporary homes for meanwhile use on sites where housing developments have stalled.

Episode 3 | Safety Act Gateways | Breaking Barriers

The Building Safety Act 2022 is a landmark piece of UK legislation introduced in response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy. It aims to overhaul building safety regulations, particularly for higher-risk residential buildings, and ensure greater accountability across the construction and property sectors. However, the Gateway process under the Act is causing notable delays to housing delivery, particularly for high-rise residential projects. Phoebe Evans-Khan (Bugler Group) talks to Oliver Lowrie (Ackroyd Lowrie) about the impact of the new legislation, and consider the opportunities and solutions to getting through the gateways.
